Metal E Seals
Moontown metal E seals (E-rings) are resilient, all-metal static seals with an E-shaped cross section. The multi-convolution profile gives the highest spring-back and deflection capability of our metal seal range, making E seals the preferred choice where flange separation, thermal cycling or pressure pulsation would defeat a conventional gasket or an O-section metal seal.
Design Characteristics
The E-section is formed from high temperature alloy sheet such as Inconel or stainless steel. Because the convolutions act as a series of springs, the seal maintains sealing-line contact as the joint moves — accommodating significantly more deflection than metal O or C rings while requiring a comparatively low seating load.
- Temperature range from cryogenic up to 1100°C (alloy dependent)
- Suitable for vacuum through to high pressure service
- High spring-back accommodates flange rotation and thermal cycling
- Low required seating load compared with solid gaskets
- Circular, racetrack and custom shapes available
- Plating and coatings (e.g. silver, gold, PTFE) to suit media and leakage requirements
Typical Applications
- Gas turbine and jet engine casings
- Exhaust systems and hot-gas ducting
- Nuclear and power generation flanged joints
- Aerospace and space systems
- High temperature process equipment
Selecting a Metal E Seal
The key factors when specifying an E seal are the operating temperature, system pressure and direction, available flange load, allowable leakage rate and the groove or cavity dimensions. Plating or coating provides a soft, malleable surface that smears into small imperfections in the mating hardware, enhancing seal performance.
Every Moontown E seal is engineered to the application. Please contact our technical department with your hardware details, temperatures and pressures and we will recommend the correct section, alloy and coating.
Metal E Seals Engineered to Your Joint
Every E seal is matched to its flange — section, alloy and coating. Send us your joint dimensions, temperature and pressure and our engineers will specify the right seal.
